In the lead-up to InterTabac 2024—the world’s largest trade fair for tobacco products and smoking accessories, which kicks off today (September 19th) until September 21st in Dortmund, Germany—Tor Imports, the UK distributor of New World cigars, has been teasing the release of a new range of cigars under their Charatan brand.
Though the name may be unfamiliar to some, Charatan has been providing an authentic British tobacco experience since its founding in 1863.

Last year, the brand celebrated its 160th anniversary with a limited-edition cigar that won the Cigar of the Year UK award. Now, Charatan is launching three sophisticated new cigar blends, while unveiling bold new branding as part of its global expansion.
Founded by Frederick Charatan as a pipe manufacturer in London, Charatan remained family-owned for nearly a century, with Frederick’s son, Reuben, continuing the business until his death in 1962. The brand was later sold to Dunhill Tobacco of London in the 1970s. In the 1990s, Dunhill introduced a cigar line under the Charatan name, which quickly became the most popular Nicaraguan-origin cigar in the UK—a status it still holds today. In 2017, Tor Imports acquired Charatan, expanding its portfolio to include traditional British pipe tobaccos, further deepening its heritage.
At InterTabac 2024, Charatan is set to release three new cigar lines: the Charatan Claro, Colorado, and Maduro.

Each of these cigars is hand-rolled at Fábrica Joya de Nicaragua and reflects a blend of British tradition and Nicaraguan craftsmanship.
Charatan Claro: Mild and creamy with an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper.

Charatan Colorado: Medium strength, offering a spicy, woody profile.

Charatan Maduro: Rich and bold, with dark chocolate and earthy flavors.

These cigars will be available in Robusto, Toro, and Half-Churchill sizes, catering to a wide range of preferences.

The updated branding, featuring a unicorn, ties Charatan’s deep British heritage to modern cigar culture. Expected to reach the U.S. market in 2025, Charatan’s expansion highlights its ongoing commitment to quality and tradition, whether you prefer a smooth, mild smoke or a bolder experience.
Interestingly, I’ve encountered the brand a couple of times but most memorable was exactly a year ago today at a James J. Fox event where we celebrated the launch of Charatan 1863 and Cinco de Cinco cigars. There, I had the pleasure of meeting Carlos Zúñiga, the man behind the brand’s new chapter.

With a sleek new website and impressive visuals showcasing a cigar smoker across London, Charatan is pulling out all the stops for this release.
