A Suffolk tobacconist known locally as the “Tobacco Baron” is set to open his new cigar shop in Long Melford, continuing a family legacy that spans more than 25 years.

Theo Tanswell, who runs Tanswell Tobacco, at 7 Chestnut Terrace on Hall Street will welcome its first customers later today. While there are a few seats available outside, Mr Tanswell said he hopes to open a dedicated sampling lounge in the future, possibly next year.

The premises have been in the Tanswell family for decades, having previously served the community as a bakery and later as a chocolate shop.

Mr Tanswell, who specialises in cigars and fine tobacco, said he also plans to expand into large-scale tobacco growing around Long Melford, building on smaller crops he has cultivated before.
Tanswell Tobacco — officially named Theo Tanswell Tobacconist Specialist Cigar Merchant — will focus on premium cigars and hand-selected tobacco, blending traditional craftsmanship with Suffolk’s heritage of independent trade.
Mr Tanswell said he’s looking forward to welcoming customers when the doors open later today, adding that there will be “a warm welcome — and a fine cigar — waiting outside.”
