Tony Spacey, the founder of Cigar Lounge Derby, has died, his family has announced.

A statement posted on the business’s social media page over the weekend said:

“With great sadness… It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Tony, founder of our businesses and a much-loved husband, father, friend and colleague. Tony was a man of strong character and conviction. His vision, values and dedication shaped everything he built. We all loved his stories and learned so much from him — his legacy will continue through the businesses, the people within them and the wider community he cared so deeply about. At this incredibly difficult time, we ask everyone to keep Jan and the family in their thoughts. Funeral details will be shared in due course.”

Under Mr Spacey’s leadership, Cigar Lounge Derby became known as the East Midlands’ “Premier Gold Standard Havana Specialist”. The venue was notable for its large walk-in humidor, an in-house sampling lounge, and an extensive range of Havana cigars, including rare aged and vintage selections personally curated by Mr Spacey over more than twenty years.

Visitors could also enjoy limited edition and regional cigars, along with a full range of accessories, in what the lounge described as a traditional cigar shop with a club-like atmosphere.

Mr Spacey was widely respected in Derby and across the East Midlands for his contribution to the cigar and hospitality community. Cigar Lounge Derby attracted enthusiasts from across the region and beyond, drawn by its specialist expertise, elegant surroundings, and welcoming atmosphere.

A few years ago, I travelled 152 miles just to visit the lounge — where Tony and his wife, Jan, welcomed me like family, their dogs happily at our feet. It was a small but vivid glimpse of the warmth and generosity that earned him such widespread admiration.

Colleagues and customers have also shared tributes online, highlighting his mentorship, character, and the lasting impression he left on everyone who visited the lounge.

His legacy, the statement said, would continue through the business, its staff, and the wider community he cared for deeply.

Whenever you can this week, please raise a cigar in honour of Tony and his family!

As a regular at the lounge and knowing Tony it was sad news to hear his passing so soon,
What a great experience he brought to Derbyshire, long may it continue in his memory.
He will be missed. Rest in peace Capt T Spacey
