A visit to La Casa Del Habano – Gran Canaria

Continuing my recent theme of La Casa Del Habano visits, last week I found myself in Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands. Definitely a step up from Sheffield and Nottingham weather-wise 😎. This visit promised both sunshine and cheaper cigars than the UK — a combination that’s hard to beat, right?

Background

La Casa Del Habano Gran Canaria opened in May 2024 and is the second LCDH on the Canary Islands (the first being in Tenerife).

It’s one of around 170 La Casa Del Habano stores worldwide, located in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria — an area that seems full of Brits abroad — inside the sleek, modern Mogán Mall, surrounded by boutique stores and restaurants.

This particular La Casa is owned and operated by Dominique London, Europe’s leading premium cigar specialist, which now operates around 30 stores across the UK, Belgium, Switzerland, and the Canary Islands, offering over 10,000 products online and in-store.

I’ll admit, I’d only really started hearing about Dominique London over the last couple of years, mainly since their merger/takeover of CGars Ltd.

Dominique Gyselinck, one of the names behind the brand, has been appearing frequently on social media lately — especially in Kirby Allison’s videos.

I personally cannot wait to see what she is planning for the La Casa Del Habanos Pall Mall (London), rumoured to open on 19th February 2026. I’ve got a feeling they’re going to go big with that one.

Back to Gran Canaria — the shop there features a walk-in humidor, client lockers, and a comfortable outdoor sampling area, complemented by a range of whiskies and premium cigar accessories.

My experience

Before heading out to Gran Canaria, my cigar buddy CigarPromo on X (Twitter) had already visited the shop and shared some early impressions — so I had a sneak peek of what to expect.

I spent 7 nights in Gran Canaria and dedicated one day purely to visiting the La Casa. That’s dedication, people 😄.

Getting there

I was staying in the south of the island, where getting around by bus was super easy. The local company Global (basically the island’s TFL) runs clean, coach-style buses connecting most major towns. A single ticket costs about €5, payable by card.

If you’re staying up in Las Palmas (the capital and northern part of the island) and have a hire car, it’s probably worth driving instead — but public transport is excellent for non-drivers like me.

From the Puerto Rico bus station, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the shop.

First impressions

When I arrived, the first thing I noticed was the sampling area just outside — eight seats in two groups of four.

Approaching the shop its not clear straight away that it’s a cigar shop – this might have been designed this way due to legislation

It’s not the most private setup, being right next to a restaurant and supermarket with plenty of tourists walking by.

Quite a public setting for cigar sampling

I always feel slightly awkward sampling cigars with what I assume will be a non-cigar friendly audience 😬 — especially near families eating and shopping — but the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and I absolutely appreciate its there! It’s better than not having it.

Signs clearly marked the space as Exclusive use for customers of La Casa del Habano”, which helps you feel welcome to sample there.

Then, on to the main event — stepping inside the cigar shop itself to pick up some cigars!

Inside the cigar shop

The interior was immaculately clean and modern, like a jewellery boutique. Lots of glass. Accessories line the left wall, the cashier counter sits in the middle, and the real centrepiece — the walk-in humidor — occupies the right side.

The humidor is beautifully maintained, with cigars that appear perfectly humidified.

The ventilation system impressed me, though I did find myself wondering how the air reaches the bottom shelves (not that I’m an expert on ventilation!).

The selection was excellent: plenty of single cigars, boxes of 3–5, and a strong range of full boxes on the lower shelves. There weren’t many regional editions visible, but the usual La Casa double-band exclusives were well represented. There were more varieties of cigars here than when I visited Cuba earlier this year.

Purchases

I treated myself to a box of Quai d’Orsay No. 54s — ten cigars for around €180, which felt like a solid deal. I’ve had my eye on those for a while.

I also asked about the Bolívar Gold Medal after hearing from CigarPromo that they might have some. Initially, the assistant said they were out of stock, but just as I was leaving, she called her boss — and to my surprise, they agreed to sell me one! At €38, it was an absolute steal compared to UK prices 😲.

Bolívar Gold Medal cigars – a cigar I’ve wanted to smoke for quite some time.

Alongside that, I grabbed a Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill, a Juan López Spanish Regional Edition, and a few other singles for good measure. I’d have loved to max out my 50-cigar allowance, but sadly, the wallet said otherwise 😭.

Sampling

After my purchases, I sat outside, lit up the Romeo y Julieta Wide Churchill, and soaked up the Gran Canaria sun — the perfect ending to the visit.

It was a beautifully smooth, medium-bodied smoke — creamy, soft, and clearly well-stored. It reminded me why I love the Romeo y Julieta brand so much. A cheeky box of those wouldn’t have gone amiss either.

I did return before leaving the shop to pick up a few more single sticks!

Final thoughts

Me outside the La Casa Del Habano Gran Canaria

This visit marked my third La Casa del Habano in recent weeks, and while I probably won’t make it to all 170 worldwide (though that could be a fun challenge someday), this one was fantastic — right up there with the excellent new Sheffield and Nottingham shops.

The staff were welcoming, spoke English fluently, and the selection was strong. Prices were reasonable compared to other Canary Island shops, where some new-world cigars were going for around €20 each. Considering the steep UK prices for Cuban cigars, shopping here feels like a no-brainer.

If you’re visiting Gran Canaria, I’d highly recommend stopping by this La Casa del Habano. The outdoor seating is nice but quite public — you might find your hotel balcony or a nearby bar a more comfortable place to enjoy your smoke.

That said, if you’re travelling with family, it’s a perfect setup: send them off to explore the mall or grab lunch while you enjoy a well-deserved cigar in peace (assuming your other half approves, of course!).
